How to Choose the Right Basket Strainer for Your Industrial Pipeline
Basket strainers are one of the most critical components in any industrial pipeline system — yet they're often one of the most overlooked at the specification stage. Getting the basket strainer selection wrong can mean premature equipment failure, unplanned downtime, and costly replacements. This guide is aimed at engineers, procurement managers, and plant operators who need to make the right call the first time.
What does a basket strainer do?
A basket strainer is a type of inline filtration device that removes solid particulates — dirt, scale, rust, and debris — from liquid pipelines before they reach sensitive equipment like pumps, valves, meters, and heat exchangers. The "basket" is a mesh or perforated filter element housed inside a pressure vessel body. Fluid flows through the basket, leaving solids trapped inside, which are periodically removed by opening the strainer body for cleaning.
Key selection parameters
When working with basket strainer manufacturers or suppliers, these are the parameters you'll need to specify:
Line size — The strainer must match the nominal pipe diameter of your system. Standard sizes range from ½" to 48"+.
Pressure rating — Specify the design pressure of your system. Common ratings follow ASME/ANSI Class 150, 300, 600, and 900.
Temperature — Affects material selection. High-temperature systems require alloy steel or stainless steel bodies.
Fluid type — Water, oil, chemical, seawater, or food-grade service — each requires a different material choice for the body, gaskets, and basket element.
Mesh / perforation size — Measured in microns or mesh count. Coarser filtration (1/16" perforations) protects against large debris. Fine mesh (50–200 microns) protects sensitive instruments. The finer the mesh, the more frequent the cleaning required.
Body material — Cast iron (standard water service), carbon steel (oil and gas), stainless steel 316 (corrosive or chemical service), HDPE-lined (aggressive chemical service), duplex stainless (offshore and seawater).
Single basket vs duplex basket
Single basket strainers require the system to be shut down for cleaning. For critical continuous-flow applications where shutdown is not acceptable — refinery processes, water treatment plants, offshore platforms — a duplex strainer is preferred (see Blog F2).
